Employee Referral Schemes, How Well Do They Work? 
 
It’s common knowledge that most organisations offer staff incentives to refer both friends and family. These incentives attract new candidates and help to reduce the cost of recruitment fees. In theory, this sounds like an excellent idea. However, there is a flip side and candidates don’t often recognise this.

Candidates who send their CV to organisations through referral schemes often assume they will have preferential treatment and deals will often be made in advance to split the referral fee.  Recruiters come across these candidates all the time. Candidates who have had their CVs introduced by friends but months later, they still haven’t received any feedback or acknowledgement regarding their application.

Submitting CVs through referral schemes can have negative outcomes:
 

·         CVs may not be prepared sufficiently for the role they are applying for; therefore, the application could be compromised
 
·         The informal nature of the introduction can often leave the candidate with no response for months, as there is no one to follow up on your behalf.
 
·         When applications are made through informal channels, recruiters can no longer apply to any other roles within that organisation on your behalf, for up to 12            months  
 
Hopefully, this will highlight why employee referral schemes aren't always your best choice and will encourage you to look at the other options available to you.
